Making a commitment to change your life can be overwhelming, even if those changes will bring you a new future. Many immigrants facing language barriers have a hard time finding a good job and starting a new life in the United States. An education that offers both English classes and occupational training provides the solution!
Long Island Business Institute (LIBI) has been established in New York for 38 years. We have the experience to help you achieve your highest potential so that you can complete a degree and find a job in your field of study.
As President, I have tried to make improvements to LIBI that will assist all of our students in achieving their goals. The LIBI theme of dedication and enthusiasm towards helping students succeed sets the tone for a great team of teachers, administrators and staff.
At Risk Counselor ( Flushing )
Of course, it is not always easy to achieve one's goals without life's little problems and setbacks interfering. Our "At-Risk" Student Advisor understands that students usually face various problems, including family matters, financial difficulties, communication problems, learning problems, etc. Services are available to help you find the tools you need to succeed, on and off campus.
Sensitivity to Language Challenges
LIBI is always willing to provide extra help for students having learning difficulties. As early as the first couple of weeks in the semester, instructors will recommend students who need extra help for various services to be sure they are receiving all the help they require to succeed.
The Learning Center ( Flushing )
The Learning Center is staffed by several multilingual instructors. Students are encouraged to speak English but are permitted to use their mother languages when they need extra assistance and get re-motivated. LIBI's Learning Center, where extra help and tutoring is provided, now has extended hours. Here, instructors meet with the student's individually and in small groups to help students solve problems, create study plans, and prepare for exams.
Programs of Study
· ACCOUNTING
This Associate in Occupational Studies degree program offers training in the essential skills necessary for entry-level positions in the field of Accounting, including Junior Accountant and Bookkeeper.
· BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
This Associate in Occupational Studies degree program covers a broad array of management-related studies. Students are prepared for a wide range of entry-level business management positions with an emphasis on small business management.
· COURT REPORTING
The Associates in Occupational Studies degree program in Court Reporting is designed to provide students with the instruction, technology, and skill-building training essential to become employed in the field of court reporting and to instill in them the integrity and ethical behavior pertinent to the field. A variety of opportunities exist for court reporting graduates working for court reporting agencies; taking depositions, working in court rooms recording actual court cases, as closed captioners in broadcasting, and as CART captioners for the hearing impaired.
· ESL - ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE ( Flushing )
LIBI also offers a superior English as a Second Language (ESL) program for immigrants who need special English assistance. Degree students may take up to two additional semesters to improve their English. For those students who plan to pursue employment in the U.S but whose English is not strong enough for the degree program, there is a special 2 semester ESL-only program. Upon completion, they would be eligible to enter the degree program if they wish. LIBI ESL instructors are an experienced group and most have Master's degree-level credentials in TESOL or related fields. We work hard to assist students overcome any obstacles that may arise in the course of study.
· MEDICAL BILLING AND INSURANCE
LIBI has recently received New York State Education Department approval to offer a short-term 30-credit diploma program in Medical Billing and Insurance. In two-semesters (eight months) this new program prepares students to manage all aspects of hospital, clinic, and doctor office systems, including medical coding, billing and insurance.
· OFFICE TECHNOLOGY
The LIBI Flushing Branch offers a number of programs in high-demand fields, including, OFFICE TECHNOLOGY: This Associate in Occupational Studies degree program prepares for a wide range of entry-level office administration and technology positions. Graduates may also select a MEDICAL OFFICE OPTION which familiarizes students with procedures and document production in the modern doctor, clinic, or hospital office.
Financial Aid
LIBI is authorized to award Federal and New York State tuition grants to qualified students. Our Financial Aid Specialists will sit with you and will help you determine your aid eligibility and assist you with the paperwork. Many students are eligible for full financial aid. Those who are not eligible for full aid may be eligible for a US income tax credit or deduction. We will help you calculate your potential for such tax advantages. At any cost, a great education is priceless!
Day and Evening classes
Classes are available morning, afternoon, or evening to accommodate jobs, childcare schedules, and other requirements of busy adult students. Small class sizes assure individual student attention.
Pursue a High School Diploma and a College Degree at the same time!
( Business AOS programs )
This program, authorized by New York State, accepts a limited number of students who have not graduated from high school. All applicants who meets the requirement, are enrolled in a special program to study both high school and college curricula. Generally, students finish the program within 16 months and receive both a GED diploma and a college degree.
