About LIBI Financial Aid Programs Library Tutoring/The Learning Center Alumni

1. How long will it take me to complete my college program?
The amount of time for completion of each of LIBI’s program, depends on whether the student requires remedial classes, such as ESL or Developmental English. This is determined upon completing the entrance exams. Our Diploma programs are two semesters long and take approximately eight months as a full-time student to complete. Our AOS degree programs are approximately four semesters long and take approximately 16 months. Students who require ESL courses may require one to two additional semesters of classes.

2. Can I transfer credits from another college to your college?
All transfer credits are evaluated by several criteria. You must require those course credits in the program to which you are transferring into, the credits must be of a grade C or better, and must come from an accredited college or university in the U.S.A. The course to be transferred must also have the credit equivalent or greater than the course we offer. The registrar’s office will assist you with transferring credits.

3. Will LIBI help me find a job once I graduate?
Yes, all LIBI graduates are entitled to life time placement assistance. Both of our campuses have a career service specialist to assist our student’s with resume writing, job searches, internet job searches, resume postings, creating resumes and cover letters, interviewing skills and more. Near the end of your program, the career services specialist will meet with you, and before you reach your graduation date, prepare you for the job market. Each of our career services centers maintains relationships with companies and organizations that hire our graduates. We will set up interviews and help you follow-up afterwards.

4. How will I be able to work and go to school at the same time?
LIBI offers both day and evening schedules and some Saturday courses. Students can take a combination of day, evening and Saturday courses to accommodate their work or family obligations.

5. I just missed signing up for the Fall semester, do I have to wait a five months to start school?
At LIBI, you won’t have to wait five months to start! LIBI offers six starts a year at the Flushing campus for all the Business AOS programs and three starts for Court Reporting at Commack and Flushing. You can begin a program every two months at LIBI. The link to the registrar’s office lists 2007-2008 semester dates and program start dates.

6. I didn’t finish H.S., do I have to get my GED before I can apply?
Students without a H.S. diploma may apply to all of the LIBI Business programs in Accounting, Business Management and Office Technology. Once accepted, you can earn your GED and your college degree at the same time. You will receive both a GED and a college degree when you complete all program requirements.

7. What if I do not pass the entrance exams and I am not accepted?
You can reapply to take the exam in one month.

8. I want to get my degree, but I have worked for many years and have some skills that I learned on my own. Do you award credit for life experience?
At LIBI, we will award college credit if a student can pass the proficiency exam in that area. Credit will be awarded towards the program requirements, if the course is required for the student’s program. A nonrefundable fee is charged for all proficiency exams and exams must be taken prior to registering for the corresponding course.

9. Is the Long Island Business Institute an accredited college?
Yes, LIBI is accredited by the Accrediting Council of Independent Colleges and Schools. You can visit their website at www.ACICS.org

10. How do I get to LIBI? Is it better to drive or take public transportation?
If you drive, you can easily reach either campus. There is a municipal parking lot across from the LIBI Flushing campus and a free parking lot for the Commack campus. If you take public transportation, there are several bus lines to both campuses, and the 7 train or LIRR take you just one block from the Flushing campus.

11. Are classes taught in languages other than English?
Classes at LIBI are taught only in English. Students who need extra help with language skills can receive extra help at the Flushing Learning Center where bilingual tutors can help students in their native language study for exams, work on homework problems or manipulate through computer applications.

12. What is the student demographic? How do I know I will fit in?
LIBI has a diverse student population of all ages and ethnicities. There are clubs and organizations at LIBI that provide opportunities for socializing and networking. Check out our student life, student testimonials and graduation pages to see our students in action.

13. Do you have a book store on campus? How about a cafeteria? Is there a student lounge?
LIBI knows you are busy running from work to school so we try to make things as easy as possible. Books are distributed to you on your first day of class right on campus. A student lounge is located at each site and there are vending machines with snacks and beverages available for purchase. The Flushing campus has a mini-mart that sells ice cream, coffee, Snapple and a large variety of snacks. Because of our great locations, there is an abundance of restaurants within walking distance to our campuses and no need for a cafeteria.

14. Can I get a job on campus?
If you qualify for financial aid you may also qualify for the Federal Work Study Program. If you do, after one semester LIBI will try to place you in a part-time job on campus where you can obtain valuable job skills while earning some money. Students who are interested in the Federal Work Study Program should contact Annie Mak at the Flushing campus, or Vickie Bullard at the Commack campus.
