New Books
The World Almanac and
Book of Facts
Ken Park
Published continuously since 1868 by various publishers, The World Almanac remains
the gold standard of ready reference. The tales about its use are legion and apparently
true: World War II GIs placed it in their lockers along with Betty Grable photos;
after John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Lyndon Johnson recited the presidential oath
from a copy of the almanac; and the book was smuggled to the U.S. hostages in
Tehran in 1979. This venerable and remarkable work publishes both its essential fare
(statistics, award winners, sports info, nature and science facts, etc.) while still
incorporating contemporary and fascinating new material (travel books for the armchair
traveler and a country music crossword puzzle whose answers refer to page numbers
in the text). The almanac now contains some color photographs and illustrations
as well. Covering events up to October 2005, the volume is a superb source for
very recent history. (From Library Journal)
